Family vacations produced some of my best picks!

trunk full of bench vises

A couple of tips to make the most of your family vacation and enjoy the hobby of collecting vises!

  • A few days prior to leaving on vacation, search marketplaces for where you are staying and see what’s available. I have scored plenty of deals while on vacation including the 13 vises in the trunk above along with a beautiful Cincinnati buffer.
  • Bring enough vehicles to carry home your loot! If you don’t plan ahead, you may get stuck renting a U-Haul trailer! The picture above was our family vacation to Hundson, NY and we brought two vehicles with us to make sure we had room. I ended up splitting up the vises into two vehicles as my Ford Fusion was hanging low with everything in the trunk!
  • When reaching out on FB Marketplace, make sure people know you are visiting their area so they don’t look at your profile and think you are an idiot asking about something too far away to pickup.
  • Schedule early morning pickups to not take time away from family. The earlier the better for me.
  • Every section of the country has different stuff to pick besides vises. Down South, it’s agriculture and automobilia, rust belt has industrial stuff like vises and tools. Everywhere else is a good mix of housewares and primitive antiques.
